The UDBS research agenda is “Entrepreneurship, Private Sector and Sustainable Development”. The decision to focus on this agenda is based on where the School has comparative advantages and the acknowledgment of the presence of untapped resource and investment opportunities for MSMEs to achieve the Millenium Development Goals. The main research themes under the UDBS research agenda are a) good governance and business ethics for sustainable development, (b) promising sectors for sustainable development, (c) private and public sector reforms and inclusive development, (d) behavioral and human capital development and management, and (e) management information systems development and applications for economic sustainability.
Internationalization and globalization does not feature as a separate theme because it cuts across all the five identified themes. One can address governance and business ethics at global level, internationalization of promising sectors or their participation in the global market, etc.
UDBS research activities have been funded by Sida/SAREC (Sweden), NORAD (Norway) DAAD (Germany) and DANIDA (Denmark), with few international organizations such as ILO, USAID, World Bank commissioning the School of Business to undertake some specific action research projects. The UDBS individuals and research groups have also benefited from research funds granted from outside the above named sources, including the Investment Climate and Business Environment Research Fund (ICBE-RF) administered by TRUSTAFRICA, Senegal (funded by Canadian based IDRC and the Foundation for
Sustainable Enterprise and Development (FSED) and others. Moreover, UDBS sets aside some money from its internally generated funds to finance its research activities.
